Your desert adventure begins as we depart Fes, heading south toward the Sahara. First, we cross the Middle Atlas Mountains, passing through fragrant cedar forests where Barbary macaques often play. Next, we stop in Midelt, a charming market town famous for its apple orchards and fossil workshops.
After lunch, the landscape transforms as we descend through the spectacular Ziz Valley, where a lush palm oasis contrasts dramatically with the surrounding arid plains. Finally, we arrive in Merzouga as the sun sets behind Erg Chebbi’s golden dunes, where you’ll spend the night at a comfortable desert hotel.
Today immerses you in authentic Sahara experiences. In the morning, we explore the desert by 4×4, first visiting Khamlia village to hear spiritual Gnawa music. Afterwards, we meet nomadic families in their traditional wool tents, learning about their centuries-old lifestyle.
As afternoon approaches, you’ll mount your camel for a magical sunset trek across the orange-hued dunes. By twilight, we reach our luxury desert camp where you’ll enjoy traditional Berber hospitality – delicious tagine dinners, rhythmic drum music, and unparalleled stargazing under the vast Saharan sky.
We begin before dawn to witness the spectacular sunrise over the dunes. After returning to Merzouga for breakfast, our journey continues northwest through the Todgha Valley. Soon, the landscape changes dramatically as we reach Todra Gorge, where 300-meter-high limestone cliffs create a breathtaking canyon. You’ll have time to walk through the narrowest sections before we continue to Dades Valley.
Known for its surreal “monkey fingers” rock formations, the valley glows red in the evening light. We overnight in a charming guesthouse perched above this geological wonder.
After breakfast, we follow the scenic “Route of a Thousand Kasbahs” toward Ouarzazate. First, we stop to admire Dades Valley’s most impressive rock formations. Next, we visit Atlas Film Studios, where countless Hollywood films were shot.
Then comes the highlight – Ait Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed ksar that starred in films from Lawrence of Arabia to Game of Thrones. After exploring this clay fortress, we cross the High Atlas Mountains via Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260m). Finally, we arrive in vibrant Marrakech by evening, where the sounds of Jemaa el-Fnaa square welcome us.
